February is National Senior Independence Month and the perfect opportunity to learn more about how you can help an aging senior retain their independence for longer.
As seniors age, they may face challenges that threaten their independence, but with the right strategies and support systems in place, it’s possible to enhance their quality of life while helping them live independently in their own home as long as possible. You can help – be a neighbor who cares!
Here are some simple strategies to help seniors remain independent:
1️⃣ Safety First: Ensure their home is safe and easy to navigate. You can do this by making sure to remove any tripping hazards, install grab bars in the bathroom, and make sure there’s good lighting throughout the house. You may also need to help adapt their home whicgh may involve installing ramps, stairlifts, or other mobility aids to make everyday tasks easier and safer.
2️⃣ Encourage Independence: While it’s important to offer support, it’s equally important to encourage independence. Allow your loved one to make their own decisions and respect their choices, even if they differ from your own. Empowering them to make their own choices gives them a sense of control and self-worth, which is essential for maintaining independence.
3️⃣ Offer Assistance with Tasks: Offer to help with tasks that may be difficult for them, such as grocery shopping, cleaning, or changing the sheets on the bed. Even small gestures like helping with laundry or organizing can make a big difference.
4️⃣ Encourage Regular Exercise: Physical activity is crucial for maintaining strength and mobility. Encourage your loved one to engage in activities like walking, swiming or gentle stretching exercises to keep their body strong and flexible.
5️⃣ Stay Connected: Loneliness can be a significant challenge for seniors living alone. Make an effort to stay connected by regular visits, calling or texting to check in, or by helping them join social groups or activities in the community. (Read how to improve their social connections here.) Connecting with others and maintaining meaningful relationships is vital for overall happiness and independence.
6️⃣ Arrange Transportation: If driving becomes challenging, help them arrange alternative transportation options such as the services by Neighbors Who Care. Our volunteers are ready to offer them a ride or they can use our van transportation service.
7️⃣ Encourage Healthcare: Teach them how to make healthy food and beverage choices that help boost energy and improve brain health. You can learn more on these topics in chapter 2 & 3 in our FREE ebook – Aging Made Easier. (Download ebook here) You can also help them stay on top of their medications by organizing pillboxes or setting up reminders.
8️⃣ Stay informed about available resources and support services in your community, such as senior centers, support groups, and home care agencies. Sign up for our blog here and stay up to date on what’s happening in our community with our monthly enews.
