Who We Care For

We offer compassionate volunteer services to help seniors maintain their independence. We care for individuals in the following situations:

  • Homebound – permanently or short term
  • Physically limited, frail, lonely
  • Recovering from surgery and/or hospitalization
  • Caregivers – providing relief for full time caregivers

Our History

Neighbors Who Care (NWC) was founded in 1994 when faith leaders in the Sun Lakes community recognized the area’s homebound, disabled, and/or frail elderly had a growing need for a little help to remain safely in their homes as they age.

Ever since, at our core, Neighbors Who Care fulfills its mission of supporting seniors helping them to live at home safely with pride, dignity, and independence.

Since its beginnings, NWC staff and its board of directors recruit, train, and manage volunteers to provide quality non-medical assistive services to enrolled clients via a simple “neighbor helping neighbor” approach. The founders carved out a distinct service area comprising 32 square miles within the communities of south Chandler and Sun Lakes—an area lacking human services for the third highest population of elderly adults in Arizona.

The typical Neighbors Who Care’s client is a woman, aged 75 or older, widowed, and living alone without access to extended family members and/or sound financial resources.

Our Neighbors Who Care volunteer-fulfilled service provides a model of healthy aging in place. Our data tells us that because of our help, our clients live happily and safely in their own homes for up to five years longer! Without our support services, many of our homebound clients would be forced to live with family members or be forced to move to assisted living facilities or nursing homes, often at state expense.
