Each May, we celebrate Older Americans Month—a time to honor the strength, wisdom, and lasting contributions of older adults across the nation. This year’s theme, “Powered by Connection,” shines a light on the importance of meaningful relationships and community involvement as we age.
At Neighbors Who Care, we believe staying active and engaged is essential to aging well. Whether it’s through learning something new, giving back, or simply being present for others, older adults thrive when they remain connected—to their passions, their peers, and their purpose.
Staying Engaged Starts with Opportunity
As we grow older, opportunities for growth don’t disappear—they evolve. Here are a few meaningful ways you or a loved one can stay engaged, right here in our local community:
Learn Something New with New Adventures in Learning
Curiosity has no age limit! New Adventures in Learning offers a variety of courses designed for lifelong learners who want to expand their knowledge, explore new topics, and connect with others who share their interests. Whether you’re passionate about history, wellness, technology, or creative arts, there’s a class for you. https://www.cgc.edu/community/lifelong-learning
Become a Friendly Visit Volunteer
Loneliness is one of the greatest challenges many aging adults face—but it doesn’t have to be that way. Through our Friendly Visit program, volunteers spend time with homebound neighbors, offering conversation, companionship, and connection. These visits may seem simple, but they create a lasting impact on both sides of the door.
Support Independence Through Small Acts of Service
Sometimes, staying independent simply means having help with everyday tasks. Volunteers who provide rides to grocery stores, assist with errands, or just check in regularly help ensure older adults remain active members of the community. These small acts of service are powerful ways to give back—and often lead to unexpected friendships.
Connection Fuels Health and Happiness
Research continues to show that strong social connections lead to improved physical health, better mental well-being, and longer lives. But more importantly, connection brings joy, purpose, and belonging—things we all need, at every age.
So this Older Americans Month, we ask: What will you do to stay connected?
Whether you enroll in a new class, make a new friend, or become a volunteer with Neighbors Who Care, you’re not just enriching your own life—you’re helping to build a stronger, more compassionate community.
