Did you know more than 40% of family caregivers pass away before the loved one they’re caring for? The stress, exhaustion, and constant responsibility can quietly take a toll.
But it doesn’t have to be that way. Support, rest, and community can make all the difference.
At Neighbors Who Care, we understand the challenges that family caregivers face. That’s why we offer free services designed not only to support older adults but also to give caregivers the break they deserve. This kind of relief, often called “respite care,” can make all the difference in maintaining balance and well-being for both the caregiver and the one receiving care.
What do Respite Care Visits look like?
When a caregiver’s loved one becomes a Neighbors Who Care client, they can schedule two free, two‑hour visits per week simply by calling our office three business days in advance. During those visits:
- Our compassionate volunteers stay with the client, providing companionship and conversation. This is especially helpful if the person can’t be left alone.
- While volunteers spend time with your loved one, you can take a deep breath, run an errand, attend an appointment, or simply step outside for a bit of sunshine or quiet time in another room.
These visits give caregivers targeted, reliable respite without any cost to the family, thanks to our dedicated volunteer team and community donations.
Why Respite Care Matters
When caregivers receive help, they’re much more likely to stay healthy and and manage the many demands of caregiving with less stress. Regular breaks can reduce stress, prevent burnout, and ultimately improve the quality of care they provide.
It’s not just a break—it’s care for the caregiver.
Around 70% of unpaid caregivers of adults report one or more adverse mental or behavioral health symptoms. The daily demands of caregiving can lead to stress-related health concerns including exhaustion, anxiety, depression, and even long-term physical conditions such as heart disease or hypertension.
