As summer temperatures soar, it’s crucial to ensure we take measures to prevent heat-related illnesses. Here are some tips to help us stay cool and comfortable during the scorching hot days ahead:
1️⃣ Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Staying properly hydrated is essential. Drink plenty of water throughout the day. You may even need to set reminders on your phone, use an app such as WaterMinder or Hydro Coach. You can also fill a container in the morning and work all day to drink it all.
2️⃣ Dress light and loose! Light-colored, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics like cotton can help our bodies stay cool. Loose-fitting garments allow air circulation and prevent overheating.
3️⃣ Limit sun exposure! ♀️ Be prepared and stay inside during the heat of the day. It’s best to avoid the sun during peak hours, typically between 10 am and 4 pm. Run your errands early in the morning and try and stay inside as much as possible. If you have to be outdoors, find shade under trees, umbrellas, or awnings. If you swim for exercise, try and get your workout in as early as possible.
4️⃣ Keep indoor spaces cool! ❄️ Don’t be afraid to turn down your air conditioner during this heat wave. The money spent on running the air will be a lot less that the cost associated to heat-related issues. More severe form of heat exhaustion and heat strokes can require hospitalization. Use fans along with your air conditioning to maintain comfortable temperatures inside. Utilize shades, curtains or even tape a black garbage bag on your window to block direct sunlight.
5️⃣ Check on each other! In times of extreme heat, it’s important to stay connected. Reach out to others, especially our aging seniors, to ensure their well-being.
