Nina believes her kind heart and desire to help others came directly from her amazing mother. Her mother always taught her that friendship is free, leading by example through simple, thoughtful actions. Nina warmly remembers her mother pulling out a well-worn little phonebook to call people so they would never feel lonely. She made a habit of sending sweet cards and letters, often clipping interesting stories from the newspaper and decorating each envelope with bright stickers and encouraging notes.

When her mother’s world grew smaller due to age and illness, Nina was heartbroken to watch people drift away. She saw firsthand how much her mother needed genuine human connection. While doctor visits, nursing care, and therapy appointments are essential as we age, Nina recognized that professional care can never replace true friendship. Nina reached out on social media asking folks to send her mother cards, and several kind souls responded. That caregiving journey left a lasting imprint on Nina’s heart.

After her mother passed away, Nina came across a post from a family member in a care facility who was looking for mail or phone calls. Realizing she could pick up right where her mother left off, Nina began sending cards, letters, and making weekly phone calls. When that family member eventually passed, Nina felt a void that only helping others could fill. She wanted to reach more seniors longing for personal connection, and after seeing a news feature about Neighbors Who Care, she knew she had found the right place.

Since joining the team in August, Nina has provided Welfare Visitations and Respite Care. Her gentle approach quickly made her a favorite among clients, leading to her placement in the Friendly Visitor program.

The Friendly Visitor program pairs volunteers with clients to build lasting, meaningful relationships. These connections are vital, as companionship plays a huge role in supporting mental health and relieving isolation. Visits begin comfortably in the client’s home, and over time, pairs often enjoy outings together like sharing a meal, running errands, or catching a movie.

Nina and her Friendly Visiting partner connected instantly on their very first day. They always find plenty to chat about, look forward to their weekly visits, and are already planning fun outings together. The experience has been deeply rewarding for both of them, fulfilling a deep need for connection and community.

For volunteers, the Friendly Visitor program offers a unique chance to share joy, build true friendships, and learn from one another. Nina brings that spirit into every visit.

Married for 30 years to her husband Tim, an IT Director, Nina is the proud mother of four grown daughters. Throughout her life, she has worked as an Assistant Administrator, a Construction Engineer, and a dedicated stay at home mother. As a lifelong volunteer, Nina hopes to inspire her daughters just as her mother inspired her, proving every day that friendship is free.
