Greg – A Helping Hand with a Heart of Gold

When Greg became a volunteer with Neighbors Who Care in the summer of 2018, he was no stranger to giving back.  A long-time supporter of food banks, Habitat for Humanity, and Junior Achievement, Greg has always believed in the power of community service.  But it was a simple internet search that brought him to our organization and a deeply personal connection that made him stay.

While looking for new volunteer opportunities, Greg came across Neighbors Who Care and immediately thought of his widowed mother living in South Carolina.  He realized how much comfort it would bring him to know someone like a Neighbors Who Care volunteer was checking in on her.  That moment of empathy led him to join our mission, and he’s been making a difference ever since.

With a professional background in the aerospace industry, both as an engineer and in engineering management, Greg also used his leadership skills to coordinate education sponsorships for his company for Junior Achievement.  That passion for education and service has naturally extended into the wide range of volunteer roles he now takes on with us.

Greg wears many hats at Neighbors Who Care, volunteering in respite care, friendly visiting, minor repairs, and business assistance.  Through respite, he’s witnessed the wide spectrum of human need and connection.  Some clients simply rest while he sits quietly to ensure their safety; others engage him in conversation or card games.  One experience that especially struck him was caring for a non-verbal client.  Each week, Greg would come over so the client’s wife could go bowling and have lunch with a friend.  After the client passed, Greg happened to run into the wife, who tearfully thanked him for giving her that precious time away – time that helped her refuel and continue her caregiving with renewed strength.  It’s moments like these that remind Greg of the real value behind his efforts.

In addition to respite, Greg also lends his skills to minor home repairs, always going above and beyond to fix whatever he can, making homes safer and lives a bit easier for our clients.  Most recently, he began a new connection through our Friendly Visiting program, bringing companionship and conversation to a client who looks forward to his visits each week.

Greg’s dedication is rooted in a simple but powerful belief: that support programs like Neighbors Who Care should be available in every corner of the country.  We’re honored to have him as part of our volunteer family, and grateful for the kindness, reliability, and warmth he brings to every client he serves.
